Mustang Sally - San Diego, California

As luck would have it, Michael's Aunties husbands sister lives in San Diego so we stayed with them for 2 days. When we arrived we were greeted with sunny blue skies and palm trees which reminded us that we were now in California. We had booked to pick up our red mustang convertible from the Avis San Diego office. Luckily Michael had Avis points so we got the convertible quite cheap. Once we picked it up we immediately put the roof down, feeling the breeze on our face we speed away to Sue and Dave's place.

Once again we took this time to catch up with family avoiding the standard tourist experience. Dave is a mechanic by trade so he loves his vehicles and had an old mustang from 1965 parked in his drive way. This is the model we had initially dreamed of driving for our road trip so we squealed with delight when he said we could take it out while we were visiting.

The next day we took the old mustang out leaving our car rental at home. It was a beautiful car with its old interiors. It took a while to get used to the seat belt which buckled around our waist like a theme park cart ride. On the road Michael drove it down San Diego's busy freeway. I opted not to drive since the drivers were crazy so I enjoyed being a passenger instead. We took the car to La Jolla, an affluent neighbourhood of San Diego with a beautiful cove. We parked up the car and walked down the to the cove where hundreds of seals gather on the rocks.

On La Jolla cove there is a little shop where you can rent snorkels for $15.00. You can take them down to the bay and swim with the seals. There is also tons of beautiful fishes to see so it is definitely a worth while activity. While we were there we visited the Sunny Jim Cave store and went down the Sunny Jim Cave. It cost $4.00 per adult and you basically go down a long flight of steps down to the cave which has an iconic view of the sea. Its worth doing just for the pictures.

On the evening we were taken to a night called Cruisin Grand in Escondido, not far from San Diego. We cruised down grand avenue and the road sides were brimming with classic cars. Proud owners stood by their cars as people stopped and admired them. We were told this event happens every Friday and the area has seen a large tourist boom with people flocking from miles to go. We finished the night off by having a drink at an one of the Irish Pub which made us think of home.

The next day we packed up the mustang and embarked on our road trip. The plan was to drive to LA following route 1 which takes you up the west coast. Here are some pictures:
